I have enhanced this design to a considerable degree. For extra stabilization I needed solid interface for the half circle and the vertical stripe. So they won’t bend over.

In the Spotlight Magazine from July 2011 was an article about Namibia and one of the added pictures leads me to the next wall hanging. The Dead Vlei!! Since I had found the matching fabrics I started to work on this project. Sky, dunes and clay are cut freehand and sewn together. The old dead acacias are appliqued. Because of the different sizes of the tree trunks there is a visual depth. And now I need more depth from the dry out clay bottom. I took finely shaded range of colours for quilting threads and then came the free motion quilting To get some more colourful shades I played with the needle from the sewing machine and additionally I used textile colour – very gently. Along the outer edge I used a very small ribbon. /

Idea, design and realization are on my own. It’s not very difficult to sew the different parts of partly freehand cut fabrics together. New for myself is the gold crashed fabric. One need a special thread, sew the fabric criss cross or whatsoever, take a very hot steam iron and hold it above the surface of the backside and it’ll shrink. Now come the three layers together and I started free motion quilting. After the quilting is finished I take the felt – which in the meantime I have decorated with embroidery stitches, pearls and other things and fix it on the quilt with mother-of-pearl discs. Finally comes the binding and that’s it. /

We visited the farm at a public bread backing day. When I saw the remarkable gable of the timber framed building from 1834 it was love at first sight. I immediately thought by myself this barn should be done in patchwork. I took several photos and later I got a magnification from the copy shop at home. Now I needed to get perfect fabrics for my new project - and I was lucky to find some.
By pure chance I saw a TV broadcast of a special program about the nicest 10 farmyards in Northern Germany and guess which place took my organic farm? Second !!! Now this is a real challenge . .
From the magnification, I made the needed pattern and then step by step, I started to build this beautiful house. After 49 hours sewing and 27 hours of hand quilting it was done. /

This is my first attempt with textile design. I have ordered via Internet a quilt kit from the company “Handgefärbte Stoffe” (fabrics dyed by hand). It was a real challenge to create a little wall hanging with the given materials: poplin, silk, merino wool, twist, silk rods and silk cocoon and all dyed by hand. Additionally I have taken some mother of pearl pearls. Sewn and partly quilted by machine, the stitchery and silk rods with Rocaille pearls on it are handmade.
I am really satisfied with the result!
